To help the JWU community build greater cross-cultural awareness, JWU Library is placing new emphasis on obtaining books and videos that present a culturally diverse perspective. Beginning in July 2019, JWU librarians were tasked with selecting a larger percentage of materials that present the perspectives and interests of underrepresented groups, and/or were created by people belonging to underrepresented groups.
This ongoing initiative is guided by Diverse Collections: An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights, published by the Association for College & Research Libraries.
To see what’s been added to the JWU Culturally Diverse Perspectives collection so far, type JWUCDP (not case sensitive) into the search box.
Other plans inxlude:
- Conducting a collection audit to identify topics with insufficiently diverse cultural representation]
- Holding open discussions on the cultural bias in information organization and retrieval systems
