Library Chapter Scan Request Policy
Purpose: To provide Johnson & Wales University (JWU) students and employees with short-term digital access to copyright-protected information for short-term personal use only.
Chapter scans will expire two weeks after they are sent. If you would like to request the same chapters again, you may do so. However, no more than two chapters from a single work can be loaned to an individual student within a two-week period.
Scope:
-
Current JWU students and employees (and no other persons) may use a Library Scan Request Form (Form) to obtain materials held by JWU’s library and its museum; the Form cannot be used to obtain any other materials, including those through interlibrary loan.
-
Designated JWU librarians will review each Form but will not process any Form unless it is fully completed with all requested information, including a valid JWU email address.
-
Digital access to scanned materials will be provided in the form of a hypertext link, generated through Digify—a secure document delivery system validated by JWU Information Technology and Network Security—and sent to the requester’s JWU e-mail address.
-
The requester’s access to digitized materials will automatically expire within two weeks in accordance with maximum loan periods for tangible materials on reserve at JWU’s library.
-
Materials digitized and made available through Digify will be automatically protected from downloading or reproduction.
-
An individual requester cannot receive more than:
-
Two chapters per request from a textbook at a time.
-
One article per request from a copyrighted periodical or anthology
-
-
The service can only be used for isolated and unrelated reproduction of a single copy of the same material on separate occasions. It cannot be used for the related or concerted reproduction of multiple copies of the same material—whether made at one time or over a period of time and whether for use by one person or multiple persons.
-
JWU’s library reserves the right to reject requests that do not comply with all requirements.
Please be advised that by requesting this electronic material from JWU Library, you agree that:
a) You are a current student or employee of JWU;
b) You are requesting this material for the purpose of private study, scholarship, or research only, and understand the following:
a. The copyright laws of the United States (Title 17, United States Code), among possible other laws, govern the making reproductions and other use of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries may furnish a reproduction of copyrighted materials. One of these specified conditions is that the reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a requester makes a request for, or later uses, a reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that requester may be liable for copyright infringement.
